Ever written something and got stuck? Not known where to start? Are your characters a bit flat? Does your dialogue feel laboured? Does the ending satisfy?
In this workshop, best-selling author Martina Murphy will address the problems many encounter when crafting a story and through simple fun writing exercises and discussion show how you can elevate your writing to the next level.
It is not necessary to prepare anything for the session, but if you have a piece of writing that you’d like to discuss – opening scene, a scene that’s causing problems, if you need help with descriptive prose, bring it along.
Please note: there is no pressure to read your ‘on-the-spot’ written exercises aloud for the group – I know how nerve wrecking that can be – but if you would like help/encouragement with what has emerged through the exercise, then I would be delighted to hear them.

Martina Murphy
Martina Murphy– writer and director.
Martina Murphy is the author of 22 novels. She is the author of the DS Lucy Golden crime series and has written under the names Tina Reilly, Martina Reilly and Martina Murphy. Her novel 'Something Borrowed', was long listed for an Impac award. Martina's books have been sold internationally and translated into a number of languages. Her 25th novel The Wrath, the fifth instalment of the DS Lucy Golden series was released in 2025.
Martina has also written a number of plays for stage and her play ‘The InBetween’ was read as part of the DunLaoghaire Play Platform. She was one of the producers and writers on the FRACTURED podcast - a limited series podcast telling the story of an Irish family during the Irish War of Independence.
